Matches 1-3: Texas Scramble
Definition: A Texas Scramble combines elements of a normal scramble with elements of stroke play. Members of a team tee off and the best ball of the two tee shots is selected. Both players move their balls to that spot of the best ball. From this point, the hole is played out as stroke play, with all members of the team playing their own ball into the hole. The players combine their scores to form a team score for the hole and match play scoring will be used to determine who wins each hole. Match play scoring.
Matches 4-6: Alternate Shot
Definition: Alternate Shot is a format in which 2-person teams alternate hitting the same ball. The first player tees off, the second player hits the second shot, the first player hits the third shot, and so on until the ball is holed. Tee shots are alternated. The lowest score at the end of the 9 holes, wins a point for the match. This type of match is also known as “Foresomes”. Stroke play scoring.
Matches 7-9: Four Ball
Definition: Four Ball is a match pitting two teams of two players (a total of four balls being played, hence the name) against each other using best-ball scoring. All four players play their own ball throughout; at the end of each hole, the low score among the four players in the group is worth a point. The low team score for that hole is also worth a point. Any ties will receive a half point. Two points are possible each hole. The most points earned by each team at the end of the 9 holes, wins a point for the match. Point based scoring.
Matches 10-12: Scramble
Definition: In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and both players play their second shots from that spot. The better of the second shots is determined. Then both play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed. Each team records one low ball score for each hole. The lowest team score at the end of the 9 holes, wins a point for the match. Stroke play scoring.
Matches 13-15: Pinehurst
Definition: In a Pinehurst, each team member tees off, then switch balls, each playing their second shot from where their partner’s ball lies. After the second shots, the team will select the best ball and the player who did not hit the second shot plays, alternating shots until the one ball is holed. If a team chooses a tee shot which has a penalty stroke attached to it, that is the ball your team must play since that would be your team’s third shot. Match play scoring.
Matches 16-18: Two-Man No Scotch
Definition: In the 2-Man Scotch, team members tee off, then switch balls, each playing their second shot from where their partner’s ball lies. After the second shots, the team will select the best ball and play out the rest of the hole as a scramble. If a team chooses a tee shot which has a penalty stroke attached to it, that is the ball your team must play since that would be your team’s third shot. Stroke play scoring.
Matches 19-24: Match Play - (Singles)
Definition: Match play is a format in which the round is played with the goal of winning individual holes. For example, on No. 1, you score 4 and your opponent gets a 5, then you win the hole. Scoring is kept by comparing the holes won by each player. First player to win more holes than are left to play, wins the match. If tied at the end of the 18 holes, then the match was halved and each team gets a half point.
